Don't let this cute little face fool you

Well made it thru the first week with Lily she is so precious and sweet. We have mastered the crate, paper training is going great, now the "I want to chew on everything I can find" phase. We seem to always be saying No Lily, when I see her I give her a toy to distract her attention away from the other object.
And I have to say at 1 lb and 9 oz she is a feisty one. If your holding her and she wants down she will wiggle so bad you have to put her down. It is so hard not to become attached as I know my mother in law will be taking her in a couple of weeks, I am thinking around Valentine's day

About my great aunt Eva

I remember as a young girl going to my aunt Eva's house and playing and having so much fun, and 2 things that really stand in my memory is her coo coo clock and her weeping willow tree. Setting in her den and watching tv with her. I recall a special time with my great aunt when I spent the night with her. I got up the next morning and she made me some cereal and it was my first time seeing skim milk and of course being a kid I was telling her "this milk dose not look right" Later on we got dressed and went and caught the bus and went down town for some shopping. She even bought me a doll house that day. What wonderful memory's I have of her. Now I have a bracelet she made me at the age of 100

Aunt Eva is my granny's older sister and is 101 years old. Over the past weekend she developed a UTI and was hospitalized. On Monday I ask my mom how was she doing and at that point she was showing some improvement. However by Monday night she had taken a turn for the worse and was suffering kidney failure and at her age there is really nothing they can do. So now she is at hospice. She will be missed

A new crochet project

So sometimes I just start crocheting and don't know what I am making till suddenly it just happens. I had thought about doing a pocketbook and then I started looking at it as a neck warmer and that is what it became.

however I decided to kick it up and instead of the usual button closure I decided that I would make some flowers and use one of the loops of the flowers to hook around the button,

Now meet Lily this is the little maltise that I am training for my mother in law, she still has to convince her husband to let her have a dog. Cute as a button but don't let that sweet little face fool you she is a fiesty one.
I have her about 90 % paper trained, she is now crate trained and she does know the word no especially when I see her grab some yarn or a shoe to try and cut her teeth on.

I can say this she is a very smart dog and they are people dogs they love to be around you at all times

sometimes you feel like running away

There are times that I feel so over whelmed that I just would like to get in my car and run away. Having my husband around me all the time is hard as I really get no me time and then he wonders why I get grumpy. Well it's because you can't be around someone 24/7 and them not get on your nerves.

Then we have the issue with granny. There are decisions to be made and trying to make the right one at times isn't easy. She is 98 years old and has been in her home over 62 years. Back in December my uncle has come up from SC and started the process of having her put in a nursing home, talk about stress it almost appeared that she wouldn't be in her home for Christmas, well prayers were prayed and wouldn't you know my granny put her foot down and said "I am not going" turns out they were going to take all but 66 dollars a month from her and get this make her sell her home to pay for her stay.

Turns out once you make the choice to move out of your home and go to a rest home medicare can make you sell your home in order to pay for your expenses and then once the money is gone they take over again. My granny and grandpa worked to many years and have taken great pride in their home to let this happen. So now what?

I have been the one since my dad passed away that takes granny and mama to their doc appointments and such but now granny can't get down her front steps and she doesn't have a wheel chair ramp so there is the option of Hospice. Kinda of a creepy thing because we usually think of cancer and such but I have discovered that they can supply all of her needs right there at her home and she will be able to stay there and keep her home. We will see what happens

So I had this vintage fabric

I had had it in my head that I wanted to make a top, no pattern just cut and start sewing. This is some vintage fabric I had in my stash so I used it. Now I know kinda colorful and loud but to my surprise my mom and several people really liked it. I decided to crochet a border around the bottom to give it a little more length.

A snake to not be scared of

How could anyone be afraid of this cute little snake. I knitted this in a cotton yarn that I had dyed and what a cute little accessory for any age. Then there is the cable knit wool scarf that I was able to make with some left over gray and pink wool yarn add a pin for a unique look

Your life can change in a split second

September 12th started like any other day. My husband was off that day so we go up and had our coffee and was waiting for Direct Tv to come and hook up our satellite. The guy was having a hard time trying to get at signal due to all the trees around so Mike decided that if he could climb up a ladder and cut a couple of branches that might make a difference. I had walked around to the basement to put a load of laundry in and had said "Lord please don't let him fall"

About the time I got the washer going I heard a voice yell Mrs. Stuckey he fell. I went running to find my husband laying on the ground and trying to catch his breath. Instead of calm I went to to panic mode. I have never been hystercial before and really hope to never again. I ran in the house grabbed the phone and dialed 911, and managed to give them my address. They were here quickly and took him to the hospital informing me that I needed to calm down and not to try and drive to call some one. I swear I could hardly make phone calls.

What seemed like forever my son got to the house and I frankly don't remember the drive to the hospital, all I knew was I just needed to know my husband was alive and was going to be ok.

After scans they seen that my husband had broke his back, his right wrist, Thank God no internal bleeding and still had feeling in his legs and feet. The doctor said it was a bad break and he was extremely lucky not to be paralyzed.

From the moment of the fall it has changed our lives, until his back heals he is depended on me for a lot of things, things that we all take for granted like taking a bath or getting dressed. He has to wear a back brace at all times and has a cast on his right arm, sleeping for him is difficult and at this time there is no money coming into the house and that is a scary thing.

Some how I know that everything will be ok, that God is looking out for us and is with us thru it all.

So finally I have been able to get some pics edited so I can post. I know broomstick lace has been a popular crochet technique for years but for me it is a new venture. Have to say I am loving this technique.
Super easy to do and your project goes rather fast. Now in the first pics I was using a size 19 knitting needle but in the pick cowl I used a size 35 knitting needle

Has it been 5 years already?

Seems like yesterday that my son brought Gavyn to stay with me during the day and he was 6 weeks old. Now he is 5 and starts school tomorrow. He and I have done so much together through the past 5 years. I am sure going to miss him being here during the day. I will of course be picking him up from school on days my dil work and there is always the weekends.

So I hurt my wrist crocheting?

I had seen a pattern that I thought was cool so having made some fabric yarn and having a size Q crochet hook I got started. Had it finished in about an hour and thought these would make nice Christmas gifts. A few hours later my wrist started hurting and continued to get worse as evening came making sleeping last night not so great. Needless to say won't be making another one any time soon.

The pink scarf is a work in progress. I just finished needle felting the leaves now I have to vein them and see what other thing I would like to incorporate into this scarf

Tennessee River and a Maggie Valley Monarch

My mom and I had the pleasure and fun of going to the mountains for a couple of days a couple of weeks ago. The cool part was we could stop any where we wanted to so we did. I had mapped out knit shops and Cato's along the way. Our first night was in Maggie Valley NC. We stayed at the same motel we stayed out last year. They have a butterfly bush there so when I go up the next morning the butterflies were at it so go me a picture of a beautiful monarch. When we left Maggie Valley we hit the Blue Ridge Parkway and took that over to 441 and took the back roads in to Gatlinburg Tennessee. We found us a motel that was on the river so we could go out on our balcony and see the river. We ate like pigs while we were there and shopped like we had no sense. We had a blast. On the way back I took a different route and hit #81 to Bristol Tennessee where I was able to have a cup of coffee at the down town coffee shop. It was there I discovered that there was a knit shop in Abingdon Va and a Cato's so off we went.

I have found something fun and easy to do and it is done with nail polish. Think about it nail polish now comes in all colors and is a durable paint. Topped with a crackle medium now designed specifically for nail polish it can give plastic's and wood a whole new look and durability. And this is my fav part each has it's own brush that goes back in the bottle so no brush washing. How easy is that? If you click on the pictures it will take you right to my Etsy shop to see these for sale.

Dye it......Then Stamp it

I took some scrap pieces of fabric and of course dyed it in assorted colors. I used a spray bottle for applying the dye that way I had more control of how I might want it to look. After 8 hours I washed the fabric letting it dry over night. Then the rubber stamp and permanent black ink and lot's of different rubber stamps I started stamping. There are a few mistakes here and there but it is a unique way to make your scrap piece of fabric your own. On the piece with the flowers stamped on I went back and added more dye coloring the flowers in. 6 hours later washed the fabric, let dry and then ironed.

On Fathers day 4 years ago it was right after my dad had passed away on the 5th of June. Not thinking real clearly I knew I wanted him to have something really pretty on his grave. Looking around I found a beautiful blue hydrangea. The temps here in NC were hot going into the mid 90's and needless to say that poor flower took a beating out in the sun. Seeing the distress a couple of days later my brother in law brought it back to me. I brought the poor little thing home, planted it and kept it watered. Each year now it develops 1 more flower and this year it has 4 which is exactly how long my dad has been gone from us

Dye it after you knit it

So I decided to knit this item and then add my dye to it. All the flowers, beads and yarn pieces were put through the dying process too. This is a fun piece to hang on your door, wall or in a window.
I then dyed a whole new hank of cotton yarn and shades of blue, kinda reminds me of water.

If you can't dye it... Paint it.....with..... Nail Polish

When I got my manicure for the wedding I discovered that there is a nail polish that crackles. So to the beauty supply shop to see if they carried it and of course they did.
Certain game tiles will not dye due to the plastic that is used, so I decided to pain them with nail polish and apply the crackle polish to the top and the results I love.

It requires 1 coat of regular nail polish, let dry for about 5 min, then 1 coat of the crackle nail polish. Once dry you want to seal with a top coat. More of this to come

Buttons and yarn to dye for

I am still playing with dyes and techniques. What was so easy and fun about this is I used a kit by tulip dyes that came with everything you needed to have fun, I was able to spray the dye on where I wanted and in the very dark areas just applied some drops of the darkest dye. 8 hours later this is what I had and I can say there will be more. While the yarn was dyeing so were the buttons, once white now they are a dark pretty shade of green. Now all buttons will not go this dark it depends on what they are made of as to how much color they will absorb And remember your yarn has to be 100 percent cotton. I used a ball of white peaches and cream cotton yarns

Remembering my daddy

Today marks 4 years since my daddy went to be with the Lord. I find it still hard to look at his pictures with out feeling sadness come over me. I remember right after his passing all I could think of was maybe I would go soon so I could see him again. Of course my daddy wouldn't want me to think that way so life has had to go on. Losing a parent is a very hard thing to deal with, especially when you grew up in a loving family. My dad took care of us and we could not have had a better dad. I have loads of fond memories growing up and have told my mom I would relive my childhood all over again if I could.

Going to the knit shop I see lots of novelty yarns that are just out of my price range. So I came up with my own.

The first thing I did was tea dyed some white cotton yarn giving it a hint of purple. I gathered some elements that I wanted to add to the yarn, now prior to knitting as I was winding my yarn in to a ball I added small strips of a purple variegated yarn, and whats so unique about this yarn is it pulls apart giving almost the look of sea weed
I gathered some flowers and beads.

I started knitting and using a crochet hook I would slip a stitch off adding the flower or the bead. then slip the stitch back on to the knitting needle I would knit the stitch as usual. Once finished I opened the yarn up giving it the free form look. This is a fun way to add all those fun elements to the yarn with out paying a big price for it at the knit shops, and one your finished you have a truly unique piece

Tea Dying tiles and beads

I received my email from Cloth Paper Scissors the other day and there was a section on tea dying tiles. Well of course this intrigues me so I find some tiles in a game at the thrift store. Now keep in mind you can use regular tea for this but you will get a brownish stain to the tiles. For me I wanted more so you can get a great tea called Passion tea at Starbucks that is a red colored tea. You need patience though they aren't going to dye in a few minutes it is best to let the set over night You can go to the link above at Cloth Paper Scissors to get full instructions for this project as I got inspired by them.

I have just been so busy

And so far behind on blogging. 2 weeks ago we had 3 baby kittens born and I really need to get a pic up as they are cute as they can be. We had a cat dropped off about 2 months ago I guess someone didn't want her so we started feeding her and then I noticed the tummy, now I was hoping to see the kittens being born and it happened. I had a crate set up for her to go into to feel safe. So I am setting here and she was on the couch and suddenly I heard this unusual meow and she was started to lick her area, I picked her up and took her to the crate and actually just in time. within moments the first kitten was born, and then it wasn't long till there were 2 more to follow. I was so excited to watch this event as I had never seen this before.

The kittens are now 2 weeks old, their little eyes are open and they are getting about ready to explore the new world around them. Mama cat is great and in about 4 more weeks will be spayed. The vet said the earliest I could get her spayed would be at 6 weeks and to try and have the kittens weened just in case her milk gets messed up during the surgery.

Notes of interest:
A cat carries her kittens for 9 weeks
as the kittens are being born the mom immediately starts cleaning and eats the afterbirth from each kitten

As soon as a cat has her kittens she will go back into heat and could have another litter in as little as 9 weeks
So when I get her spayed she will already be pregnant

Baby kittens are born blind and deaf they rely on smell to get to their mom and nurse
There eyes will open in 7 to 10 days but they still don't see very well and their eyes will be blue changing later to the color they will be

The mom helps the kittens to use the bathroom by licking the genital area stimulating the bladder and bowels and at about 3 weeks of age they kittens will start to use the bathroom on their own. They are automatically drawn to use a little box so have one handy

Growing up my brother and I use to call the big black and yellow carpenter bee "black fat" It is mostly black and a fat bee. Well it's that time of year for these bees to be all over the place and of course now being an adult I simply ignore them and often try to snap pictures of them as I see them on flowers.

Well the other day Gavyn was here and he came running in saying grandma get it so I went out realizing that he was talking about the carpenter bee or for me the "black fat" so I told him oh hunny its just a black fat it won't bother you it's just flying around. He started to laugh at the name and now it is know as the "black flap"

Yesterday Gavyn and I had some running to do so since T J Max was across the street from Fresh Market I wanted to go in there for a bit and look around. So I get out of my car and go around to get Gavyn. We started to walk and when I went to step off the medium I fell and I fell hard, I landed on my left knee, skinning and bruising it and apparently twisted my right ankle. It was such a shock and the pain was bad that I almost passed out, but I still had gavyn by the hand. I told him we needed to set there for a moment to let me get my self together. He looked at me and said "grandma you scared me" well scared grandma too.

Now the thing that concerned me the most is NO ONE came to help. And there was a woman setting in her car right next to my car and people on the side walk but no one came to see if I was ok. Now if it had been just me that wouldn't have bugged me so much but the fact that I had a 5 year old with me has really concerned me.

What is wrong with people? I would have went to someone to make sure they were ok. Isn't that the humane thing to do? Especially when you see that they have a young child with them

Today is my mom's birthday

So I have a cake to bake and take to her and I made her a rooster/chicken coaster. For years every time you ask her what would you like for your birthday, Mother's day or any time it was time for a gift she will joke and say she wants a chicken. So I try to some how incorporate a chicken into the gift. I also bought her a pretty navy blue pocketbook that I think she is going to love.

Decoupageing with my digital's

Doing digital's I learn something new all the time. Just because it is a 300*300 doesn't necessarily mean that that is the only way you can print it. With some of the sample I did the bug was done as a 300*300 and the lady was done as a 500*500, just printed in 2 different sizes. I figured I better get some samples done to show some if the ways these digital images can be used. This is just the beginning of what these can be used for. I used 3 coats of gloss Mod Podge, letting the dry thoroughly between each coat. Then I waited 24 hours and sprayed with a high gloss sealer

I recieved an email last night from Zibbet and they were asking me to vote for them, so I went in and checked it out and went ahead and voted and was suprised at what I seen. Out of 72772 votes ArtFire 45% and Zibbet 41% were kicking then I seen that Etsy was at 3% Wow that was kinda shocking. All of these votes and they were only 3%, Voting closes at 11:59 P.M. EST on Tuesday, March 8, 2011. The winners will be announced on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, right here, on the About.com DIY Fashion GuideSite.

ahhh the start of my retro diva collection

After many hours that turned into weeks of preparing for the diva's I have a listing up on Etsy. It is a 5 paper and picture scrap booking collection and I couldn't be more thrilled with the outcome. I will get this in my ArtFire shop as well, because due to all the little fees on Etsy I have made the decision to list only one one Etsy and once sold will not be re listed but will be available on ArtFire since there I pay only one fee a month.

Ideas for fall already

So I am watching the Michael Kors fall fashion show and here is what I seen. The colors were gray, beige, a mauve color and a beautiful purple almost a grape color. The accessories were big chokers wide cuff bracelets and platform heels. Now 2 things that really caught my eye was an over the shoulder faux fur pocketbook that looked very similar to one I crocheted a few years ago ( time to bring out the hook and furry yarn) The second was a beautiful wide scarf with the pockets on each end. Just throwing out some ideas here.

Now about more digital's I have been working hard preparing some retro and vintage divas for some up coming projects here are some completed ones that will soon make an appearance in my shops . I took lot's of patterns that I purchased at the thrift shops and scanned and started erasing, editing, repairing some to get this group together.

I have put in a freebie today. It is 500*500 in size and 300 dpi's just right click and save

So yesterday I am in a bnr on Etsy and seen where a seller was selling vintage knit and crochet patterns with some great pictures. Now even though I knit and crochet I was more excited about the pictures so I could play with them. I think the end results are pretty cool.

Now just a little something to describe how I do some of my digital's. I work in Paint Shop Pro X2. I know how to create my own tube's, mask and paint brushes. I know how to get rid of backgrounds and add to or take away from pictures. I can change colors or looks of a photo and I taught myself. With lot's of time and mistakes and some great items. My digital's don't happen in a few minutes some can take days to produce and some can take a couple of hours depending on the complexity of the project. It is something I love and am very passionate about.

Our Health care system is a shamble

Last night I was bothered by what I seen at the Emergency room.

As we walked in the place was full almost no where to set, and as the night went on

the waiting room thinned out and the stay went into hours as they ran test on my granny to make sure she was ok

I watched and listened to people who had been waiting for hours to see a doctor.

There was a young couple setting close to us who had brought their young daughter
to the er in desperate need for her to see a doctor, she was maybe 8 months old
they waited over 6 hours before they were finally called back.

Another young woman who had been trying desperately to see a doc for 2 days waiting hours
because she was possibly on the verge of miscarrying her baby finally gave up and left
because she had been there so long she was tired and drained.

I then saw 2 young men come in one with a head wound that was bleeding, they had
to set down and wait and wait.

By the time we were leaving the young man with the head wound was still waiting to be
seen. Now all of this was happening after the er had thinned down

It was 4 in the morning and some people had admitted to having been there since as
early as 5 the afternoon before.

So as I am walking back to where my granny was I see them at the nurses station just to me what
appeared to be hanging out, I passed rooms of empty beds that should have had some off
these patients in them.

Then I start to think, is it because that alot of people who have to come to the
er don't have insurance. Does the hospital think that if they make you wait long enough
you will get fed up and leave? Is it all about money?

I think so, what do you think I would really love to hear some opinions

So should we give Etsy a rest and go crazy with ArtFire

I mean there are still some good about Etsy as I am 3 away from 300 sales, but Etsy is making money off of me and everyone else. Every time you list and every time you sell. What I like about ArtFire is I pay one price a month and can list like crazy, but promoting is a little confusing, their forums are way different than Etsy's oh wait that's right Etsy took those away from us. Now it has to be a team, well what if I don't want to be on all these teams. Anyway I got side tracked, back to ArtFire, Seems as if I am paying them a set price every month and Etsy double that if I list the same amount of items it would seem as if ArtFire should be the one to hang with, although I have been with Etsy so long that I will not just walk away from it.

Here are a couple of my listings on ArtFire and I will say being a premium seller has it's good there, like 3 different size banners and links to you social networking.

Making and selling digitals, I have no problem at all with people who purchase reselling what they make with them, I figure I make money you make money I mean isn't that what it's all about. I have not made many purchases due to the fact that you are not allowed to use what you purchased for commercial us.

An example of this was like the other day I was doing a shop banner and needed a certain design for the bottom half, well looked like a trip to Michael's unless I could find some to purchase on line, so I found some and there it was not to be used in digital graphics and such, so what did I do got dressed and went to Michael's and had a blast in the scrapbooking dept.

Now the other day I was working on another shop banner and I this seller wanted me to incorporate her vintage patterns and dryer balls into the banner, well the first thought was to take one of the models from the pattern and make her a center point to the banner, well then a whole idea was born, she graciously told me I could use the model I had worked on and that stared a new thing for me, I then pulled out my vintage patterns and looked for models to use and the retro cards were born

So a big thank you to Pixieval.etsy.com for allowing me to use the model , now if you are in need of some vintage patterns or some of her wool dryer balls click on her banner and go shopping

More animation fun

Yesterday I was playing with my animation program and was having a lot of fun till I realised that I had created a slide show that was very large so much so that I had to delete it from my computer, it was over a meg, my son said mom that is almost a movie, so much for all that work. Well here is a small sample of a dragon fly changing colors, I thought this was so pretty and wanted to share.

After a weekend of doing digitals the dragonfly and even some chickens have finally made it to my Etsy shop and ArtFire shop. I was able to create digital sheets, note cards and even stickers.

Etsy's new forum changes, What were they thinking?

They had been announcing for a while, and we were preparing, starting teams and such and then we see a change and the promotion are still there but for how long? The one thing that bugs me about all this is the Christiecottage BNS thread. ChristieCottage’s ♥BnS ♥ since 11/2008 with 13,607 sales thru 02/04/11

Should a thread like this be tossed away I say a big fat NO! look at the time and effort that has been put into this with over 13000 sales. I have to say I am a little upset with Etsy, I have been there since 07 and this change has caused alot of confusion with etsy sellers who depend on and count on going to the forums to promote their items, should they go away all together then what? We hope the "Teams" are a good idea? I guess we have to see what happens, but in the meantime There are alot of us that have ArtFire shops as well. Also good to have a back up plan

I learned something new

So yesterday I get a convo from someone wanting a button for their blog, I can make these all day, but then she ask for a button that works like a picture show and I went blank for a moment. Then I got to thinking you have animation shop why don't you try it. So I did and what do you know I can now make picture shows yay. So I made one for my blog over to the left featuring some Etsy sellers and here on this post

I am so excited about this.

Tubeing my photos

What's tubing? Well I work in Paint Sop Pro X2 now but started back when it was Paint shop pro 7 and have upgraded as I can. Tubing is when you can take a picture, remove the background, and then export it to you picture tube collection therefore being able to use it over and over again in differant pictures or collages. I love doing this and altering pictures and my son's and grandchildren know it so they never know what to expect, especially if a certain picture suddenly appears on facebook and they know that's not the original. They have learned that I can do some interesting things with their pics.

So Tommy my oldest and I were talking the other day and let me tell you he is a computer genius, he can do anything as far as computer work goes, so any way we got to talking and we will in the very near future be offering Web designs, I will be doing the graphics and he will be doing the rest. You can have you own web store, and I can guarantee you it will be amazing.

Picture alterations is a service I hope to add to my Etsy shop very soon

So I followed this time consuming recipe to the T, had all my ingredients, followed all the steps, and when it finally came down to hubby and I eating we both looked at each other and agreed all we could really taste was the wine, now we are not wine drinkers actually we don't drink at all so this was kind of a shock to us.
Maybe I used the wrong kinda of wine even though I asked a wine expert at the store what he would suggest to use.
There are several recipes on the web for Beef bourguignon so maybe I choose a bad one as it did call for a whole bottle of wine and for the meat to marinate for 8 hours in wine, so no wonder it tasted like wine.

I did look up the recipe from Julia Child and I did see the same ingredients with a couple of exception's 1 being 2 cups of wine not a bottle and not marinating it for 8 hours. So should I ever tackle this again I will follow Julia Child's recipe and hope I can taste other things besides the wine.

Scrambling an egg

Now i like the rest of you have scrambled eggs for years, I love a good scrambled egg, and sometimes I will add some milk to the eggs and they are usually pretty good. However I was watching Paula Deen the other day and she was doing a show on breakfast and she showed a technique for scrambling an egg that you just can't beat. Try this.... break your eggs into a bowl and instead of milk use about 2 teaspoon's of water and a tablespoon of sour cream. Beat with a whisk and scramble in butter on a med heat.
Now that is a good egg.
